The Top 5 Plants of 2021

(So far)

This year not much has changed in terms of our lifestyles – Covid still runs most of our lives.
What may have changed though, is the number of houseplants in your home now.
If you haven’t joined the plant parent community, now is as good a time as ever to start!

Below are the top 5 trending plants in Mauritius right now:

1. Monstera deliciosa

The plant that brings tropical vibes to your home.
Easy to care for, grows relatively quick (given the right conditions), and just looks stunning.
It’s still in high demand around the Island, but not many nurseries sell them. Slowly, as with any fad plant, supply will meet demand and it’ll be common to see in most homes, but it’ll never lose its appeal.

2. Rhaphidophora tetrasperma

The ‘Mini Monstera’ is not actually a Monstera, but is named so due to its similar looking leaves.
R. tetrasperma is the perfect plant for those who like the look of a Monstera but don’t have the space indoors.

3. Philodendron ‘Pink Princess’

It’s only been in the last year that this plant has really been available on the market, and its recently taken off.
Plants can’t stay on the shelves long enough before they’re all bought up. You can see why though, their leaves are stunning, with speckles of burgundy and pink. The perfect addition to any growing plant collection.

4. Calathea lancifolia ‘Rattlesnake plant’

Its easy to understand why this plant is popular, with its spotted leaves and dark purple underside.
This is a great starter plant for beginners, as it tells you want it wants. If the leaves are droopy, water it, and if you see crispy edges, it means your water has too much chlorine – use filtered water or let your tap water sit overnight before watering.

5. Zamioculcas zamiifolia (ZZ Plant)

Not new in the plant community, but still sought after and offers a great look to your home or work place. The ZZ plant is not too fussy when it comes to water or light, so its perfect if you’re an under-waterer and have minimal light in your home (minimal does not mean NO light).
